Theme: The
Prophetic Message
Topic: Message of
Reconciliation
Reading: 2
Corinthians 5:16-21
From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point
of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human
point of view, we know him no longer in that way. 17So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new
creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! 18All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself
through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; 19that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world
to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and
entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. 20So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is
making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled
to God. 21For
our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become
the righteousness of God.
Introduction
The message of the
cross of Christ is a message of reconciliation.
Following the fall of Adam and Eve, sin created a gulf between man and
God, disrupting the fellowship humans had with the Creator. God in His infinite mercy sent His only
begotten Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross.
God did this to reconcile humanity to Himself through the atoning death
of Christ, restoring the fellowship we once had with Him. Hence all who put their faith in Christ are
saved and reconciled to God. This
message of reconciliation has been committed to all believers, with the mandate
to make disciples of all nations. Not
only did Christ die to save us, He also wants us to be part of the ministry of
reconciliation; bringing people to the knowledge of God’s love- the ministry of
making Christ known.
Questions/Discussion
1. How does sin
separate us from God?
Psalm 32:1-11
1 Happy are those
whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered.
2 Happy are those to whom the Lord imputes no iniquity,
and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
whose sin is covered.
2 Happy are those to whom the Lord imputes no iniquity,
and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
3 While I kept
silence, my body wasted away
through my groaning all day long.
4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;
my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.
5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you,
and I did not hide my iniquity;
I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord’,
and you forgave the guilt of my sin.
6 Therefore let all who are faithful
offer prayer to you;
at a time of distress, the rush of mighty waters
shall not reach them.
7 You are a hiding-place for me;
you preserve me from trouble;
you surround me with glad cries of deliverance.
8 I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
9 Do not be like a horse or a mule, without understanding,
whose temper must be curbed with bit and bridle,
else it will not stay near you.

my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.
5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you,
and I did not hide my iniquity;
I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord’,
and you forgave the guilt of my sin.

10 Many are the
torments of the wicked,
but steadfast love surrounds those who trust in the Lord.
11 Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, O righteous,
and shout for joy, all you upright in heart.
but steadfast love surrounds those who trust in the Lord.
11 Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, O righteous,
and shout for joy, all you upright in heart.
Isaiah 59:1-15
See, the Lord’s
hand is not too short to save,
nor his ear too dull to hear.
2 Rather, your iniquities have been barriers
between you and your God,
and your sins have hidden his face from you
so that he does not hear.
3 For your hands are defiled with blood,
and your fingers with iniquity;
your lips have spoken lies,
your tongue mutters wickedness.
4 No one brings suit justly,
no one goes to law honestly;
they rely on empty pleas, they speak lies,
conceiving mischief and begetting iniquity.
5 They hatch adders’ eggs,
and weave the spider’s web;
whoever eats their eggs dies,
and the crushed egg hatches out a viper.
6 Their webs cannot serve as clothing;
they cannot cover themselves with what they make.
Their works are works of iniquity,
and deeds of violence are in their hands.
7 Their feet run to evil,
and they rush to shed innocent blood;
their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity,
desolation and destruction are in their highways.
8 The way of peace they do not know,
and there is no justice in their paths.
Their roads they have made crooked;
no one who walks in them knows peace.
nor his ear too dull to hear.
2 Rather, your iniquities have been barriers
between you and your God,
and your sins have hidden his face from you
so that he does not hear.
3 For your hands are defiled with blood,
and your fingers with iniquity;
your lips have spoken lies,
your tongue mutters wickedness.
4 No one brings suit justly,
no one goes to law honestly;
they rely on empty pleas, they speak lies,
conceiving mischief and begetting iniquity.
5 They hatch adders’ eggs,
and weave the spider’s web;
whoever eats their eggs dies,
and the crushed egg hatches out a viper.
6 Their webs cannot serve as clothing;
they cannot cover themselves with what they make.
Their works are works of iniquity,
and deeds of violence are in their hands.
7 Their feet run to evil,
and they rush to shed innocent blood;
their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity,
desolation and destruction are in their highways.
8 The way of peace they do not know,
and there is no justice in their paths.
Their roads they have made crooked;
no one who walks in them knows peace.
9 Therefore
justice is far from us,
and righteousness does not reach us;
we wait for light, and lo! there is darkness;
and for brightness, but we walk in gloom.
10 We grope like the blind along a wall,
groping like those who have no eyes;
we stumble at noon as in the twilight,
among the vigorous as though we were dead.
11 We all growl like bears;
like doves we moan mournfully.
We wait for justice, but there is none;
for salvation, but it is far from us.
12 For our transgressions before you are many,
and our sins testify against us.
Our transgressions indeed are with us,
and we know our iniquities:
13 transgressing, and denying the Lord,
and turning away from following our God,
talking oppression and revolt,
conceiving lying words and uttering them from the heart.
14 Justice is turned back,
and righteousness stands at a distance;
for truth stumbles in the public square,
and uprightness cannot enter.
15 Truth is lacking,
and whoever turns from evil is despoiled.
and righteousness does not reach us;
we wait for light, and lo! there is darkness;
and for brightness, but we walk in gloom.
10 We grope like the blind along a wall,
groping like those who have no eyes;
we stumble at noon as in the twilight,
among the vigorous as though we were dead.
11 We all growl like bears;
like doves we moan mournfully.
We wait for justice, but there is none;
for salvation, but it is far from us.
12 For our transgressions before you are many,
and our sins testify against us.
Our transgressions indeed are with us,
and we know our iniquities:
13 transgressing, and denying the Lord,
and turning away from following our God,
talking oppression and revolt,
conceiving lying words and uttering them from the heart.
14 Justice is turned back,
and righteousness stands at a distance;
for truth stumbles in the public square,
and uprightness cannot enter.
15 Truth is lacking,
and whoever turns from evil is despoiled.
The Lord saw
it, and it displeased him
that there was no justice.
that there was no justice.
Romans 3:1-20
Then what
advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? 2Much, in every way. For in the first
place the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God. 3What if some were unfaithful? Will
their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? 4By no means! Although everyone is a
liar, let God be proved true, as it is written,
‘So that you may be justified in your words,
and prevail in your judging.’
5But if our injustice serves to confirm the justice of God, what should we say? That God is unjust to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.) 6By no means! For then how could God judge the world? 7But if through my falsehood God’s truthfulness abounds to his glory, why am I still being condemned as a sinner? 8And why not say (as some people slander us by saying that we say), ‘Let us do evil so that good may come’? Their condemnation is deserved!
9 What then? Are we
any better off? No, not at all;
for we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under the power
of sin, 10as it is written:
‘There is no one who is righteous, not even one;
11 there is no one who has understanding,
there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned aside, together they have become worthless;
there is no one who shows kindness,
there is not even one.’
13 ‘Their throats are opened graves;
they use their tongues to deceive.’
‘The venom of vipers is under their lips.’
14 ‘Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.’
15 ‘Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16 ruin and misery are in their paths,
17 and the way of peace they have not known.’
18 ‘There is no fear of God before their eyes.’
‘There is no one who is righteous, not even one;
11 there is no one who has understanding,
there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned aside, together they have become worthless;
there is no one who shows kindness,
there is not even one.’
13 ‘Their throats are opened graves;
they use their tongues to deceive.’
‘The venom of vipers is under their lips.’
14 ‘Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.’
15 ‘Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16 ruin and misery are in their paths,
17 and the way of peace they have not known.’
18 ‘There is no fear of God before their eyes.’
19 Now we know
that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that
every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to
God. 20For ‘no human
being will be justified in his sight’ by deeds prescribed by the law, for
through the law comes the knowledge of sin.
2. What are the
lessons for us in Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32 regarding reconciliation to God through
Christ?
Luke 15:1-3,
11b-32
Now
all the tax-collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. 2And the Pharisees and the scribes
were grumbling and saying, ‘This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.’ 3 So he told
them this parable: 11 Then Jesus said,
‘There was a man who had two sons. 12The younger of
them said to his father, “Father, give me the share of the property that will
belong to me.” So he divided his property between them. 13A few days later
the younger son gathered all he had and travelled to a distant country, and
there he squandered his property in dissolute living. 14When he had spent
everything, a severe famine took place throughout that country, and he began to
be in need. 15So he went and
hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him to his
fields to feed the pigs. 16He would gladly
have filled himself withthe pods that the pigs were eating; and no one gave him
anything.17But when he came to himself he said, “How many of my father’s
hired hands have bread enough and to spare, but here I am dying of hunger!18I will get up and
go to my father, and I will say to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven
and before you; 19I am no longer
worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands.’ ” 20So he set off and
went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was
filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. 21Then the son said
to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer
worthy to be called your son.” 22But the father
said to his slaves, “Quickly, bring out a robe—the best one—and put it on him;
put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23And get the fatted
calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate;24for this son of
mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!” And they began to
celebrate. 25 ‘Now his elder son was in the field; and when he came and
approached the house, he heard music and dancing. 26He called one of
the slaves and asked what was going on. 27He replied, “Your
brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has got
him back safe and sound.” 28Then he became
angry and refused to go in. His father came out and began to plead with him. 29But he answered
his father, “Listen! For all these years I have been working like a slave for
you, and I have never disobeyed your command; yet you have never given me even
a young goat so that I might celebrate with my friends.30But when this son
of yours came back, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed
the fatted calf for him!” 31Then the father said to him, “Son, you are always with
me, and all that is mine is yours. 32But we had to
celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to
life; he was lost and has been found.”
2 Corinthians
5:16-21

3. How do we
participate in spreading the message of reconciliation?
Joshua 5:9-12
The Lord said
to Joshua, ‘Today I have rolled away from you the disgrace of Egypt.’ And so
that place is called Gilgal to
this day. 10 While the Israelites were encamped in Gilgal they kept the
passover in the evening on the fourteenth day of the month in the plains of
Jericho. 11On the day after
the passover, on that very day, they ate the produce of the land, unleavened
cakes and parched grain. 12The manna ceased
on the day they ate the produce of the land, and the Israelites no longer had
manna; they ate the crops of the land of Canaan that year.
Mark 16:9-20
The Shorter Ending of Mark
And all that had been commanded them they told briefly to those
around Peter. And afterwards Jesus himself sent out through them, from east to
west, the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation.
The Longer Ending of Mark
9 Now after he rose early on the first day of the week, he
appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons.10She went out and
told those who had been with him, while they were mourning and weeping. 11But when they
heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it. 12 After this
he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the
country. 13And they went back
and told the rest, but they did not believe them. 14 Later he
appeared to the eleven themselves as they were sitting at the table; and he
upbraided them for their lack of faith and stubbornness, because they had not
believed those who saw him after he had risen. 15And he said to
them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation. 16The one who
believes and is baptized will be saved; but the one who does not believe will
be condemned. 17And these signs
will accompany those who believe: by using my name they will cast out demons;
they will speak in new tongues; 18they will pick up
snakes in their hands, and if
they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands
on the sick, and they will recover.’ 19 So then the
Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down
at the right hand of God. 20And they went out
and proclaimed the good news everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and
confirmed the message by the signs that accompanied it.
Acts 16:16-40
One
day, as we were going to the place of prayer, we met a slave-girl who had a
spirit of divination and brought her owners a great deal of money by
fortune-telling. 17While she followed
Paul and us, she would cry out, ‘These men are slaves of the Most High God, who
proclaim to you a way of
salvation.’ 18She kept doing
this for many days. But Paul, very much annoyed, turned and said to the spirit,
‘I order you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.’ And it came out
that very hour. 19 But when her owners saw that their hope of making money
was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the market-place
before the authorities. 20When they had
brought them before the magistrates, they said, ‘These men are disturbing our
city; they are Jews 21and are advocating
customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to adopt or observe.’ 22The crowd joined
in attacking them, and the magistrates had them stripped of their clothing and
ordered them to be beaten with rods. 23After they had
given them a severe flogging, they threw them into prison and ordered the
jailer to keep them securely. 24Following these
instructions, he put them in the innermost cell and fastened their feet in the
stocks. 25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing
hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. 26Suddenly there was
an earthquake, so violent that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and
immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were unfastened. 27When the jailer
woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to
kill himself, since he supposed that the prisoners had escaped. 28But Paul shouted
in a loud voice, ‘Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.’ 29The jailer called for lights, and rushing in, he
fell down trembling before Paul and Silas.30Then he brought
them outside and said, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ 31They answered,
‘Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.’ 32They spoke the
word of the Lord to him and to
all who were in his house. 33At the same hour
of the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and his entire
family were baptized without delay. 34He brought them up
into the house and set food before them; and he and his entire household
rejoiced that he had become a believer in God. 35 When morning
came, the magistrates sent the police, saying, ‘Let those men go.’ 36And the jailer
reported the message to Paul, saying, ‘The magistrates sent word to let you go;
therefore come out now and go in peace.’ 37But Paul replied,
‘They have beaten us in public, uncondemned, men who are Roman citizens, and
have thrown us into prison; and now are they going to discharge us in secret?
Certainly not! Let them come and take us out themselves.’ 38The police
reported these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard
that they were Roman citizens; 39so they came and
apologized to them. And they took them out and asked them to leave the city. 40After leaving the
prison they went to Lydia’s home; and when they had seen and encouraged the
brothers and sisters there, they
departed.
Intercession/Worship
Conclusion
Through the death
and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we were reconciled to God, and have been
entrusted with the ministry of reconciliation.
May we, through the power of the Holy Spirit, show forth the saving
power of God in Christ.
Closing Prayer (Collect
for the Fourth Sunday in Lent)
Gracious Father,
whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came from heaven to be true bread which gives
life to the world, evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us, and we
in him, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for
ever. Amen.
