Hymn: Pass Me Not,
O Gentle Savior
Theme: Spirit of Life
Topic: Spirit of Excellence
Reading: 2
Samuel 1:1, 17-27
After
the death of Saul, when David had returned from defeating the Amalekites, David
remained two days in Ziklag.
17 David intoned this lamentation over Saul and
his son Jonathan. 18(He
ordered that The Song of the Bow be
taught to the people of Judah; it is written in the Book of Jashar.) He said:
19 Your glory, O Israel, lies slain upon your high places!
How the mighty have fallen!
20 Tell it not in Gath,
proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon;
or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice,
the daughters of the uncircumcised will exult.
19 Your glory, O Israel, lies slain upon your high places!
How the mighty have fallen!
20 Tell it not in Gath,
proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon;
or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice,
the daughters of the uncircumcised will exult.
21 You mountains of Gilboa,
let there be no dew or rain upon you,
nor bounteous fields!
For there the shield of the mighty was defiled,
the shield of Saul, anointed with oil no more.
let there be no dew or rain upon you,
nor bounteous fields!
For there the shield of the mighty was defiled,
the shield of Saul, anointed with oil no more.
22 From the blood of the slain,
from the fat of the mighty,
the bow of Jonathan did not turn back,
nor the sword of Saul return empty.
from the fat of the mighty,
the bow of Jonathan did not turn back,
nor the sword of Saul return empty.
23 Saul and Jonathan, beloved and
lovely!
In life and in death they were not divided;
they were swifter than eagles,
they were stronger than lions.
In life and in death they were not divided;
they were swifter than eagles,
they were stronger than lions.
24 O daughters of Israel,
weep over Saul,
who clothed you with crimson, in luxury,
who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.
who clothed you with crimson, in luxury,
who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.
25 How the mighty have fallen
in the midst of the battle!
in the midst of the battle!
Jonathan
lies slain upon your high places.
26 I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
greatly beloved were you to me;
your love to me was wonderful,
passing the love of women.
26 I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
greatly beloved were you to me;
your love to me was wonderful,
passing the love of women.
27 How the mighty have fallen,
and the weapons of war perished!
and the weapons of war perished!
Introduction
Excellence implies outstanding performance and going beyond all
expectations. This definition could also
be expanded to include strong desire backed by tangible actions to positively change
a situation or an earnest wish that things were different for the better. David, popularly described by the Lord as a
man after God’s Heart, mourned bitterly for Saul and Jonathan, who were killed
by Philistines in a battle. It will not
make sense to the natural mind why David, who has been anointed to be king,
would wish for Saul and Jonathan to be alive.
Saul was the king and Jonathan was next in line to the throne; if one of
them survived, David would not be king. Furthermore
Saul has been seeking to kill David!
Hence, David showed that he was truly a man of excellence through his lamentation. Ultimately, Christ is our perfect example; He
died for our sins, taking our punishment, and reconciling us with God. It could be tough to put others ahead of our
interests and ambitions. However,
through the help of the Holy Spirit, we will live lives of excellence, in
loving God and our neighbours as ourselves.
Questions/Discussion
1. What does possessing
a spirit of excellence mean?
Daniel 5:1-12,
6:1-5
King
Belshazzar made a great festival for a thousand of his lords, and he was
drinking wine in the presence of the thousand. 2 Under
the influence of the wine, Belshazzar commanded that they bring in the vessels
of gold and silver that his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple
in Jerusalem, so that the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines
might drink from them. 3So
they brought in the vessels of gold and silver that had been taken out of the temple,
the house of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his lords, his wives, and his
concubines drank from them. 4They
drank the wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and
stone. 5 Immediately the fingers
of a human hand appeared and began writing on the plaster of the wall of the
royal palace, next to the lampstand. The king was watching the hand as it
wrote. 6Then
the king’s face turned pale, and his thoughts terrified him. His limbs gave
way, and his knees knocked together. 7The
king cried aloud to bring in the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the diviners;
and the king said to the wise men of Babylon, ‘Whoever can read this writing
and tell me its interpretation shall be clothed in purple, have a chain of gold
around his neck, and rank third in the kingdom.’ 8Then
all the king’s wise men came in, but they could not read the writing or tell
the king the interpretation. 9Then
King Belshazzar became greatly terrified and his face turned pale, and his
lords were perplexed. 10 The
queen, when she heard the discussion of the king and his lords, came into the
banqueting-hall. The queen said, ‘O king, live for ever! Do not let your
thoughts terrify you or your face grow pale. 11There
is a man in your kingdom who is endowed with a spirit of the holy gods. In the days of your father he was
found to have enlightenment, understanding, and wisdom like the wisdom of the
gods. Your father, King Nebuchadnezzar, made him chief of the magicians,
enchanters, Chaldeans, and diviners, 12because
an excellent spirit, knowledge, and understanding to interpret dreams, explain
riddles, and solve problems were found in this Daniel, whom the king named
Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will give the interpretation.’ 6:1-5It
pleased Darius to set over the kingdom one hundred and twenty satraps,
stationed throughout the whole kingdom, 2and
over them three presidents, including Daniel; to these the satraps gave
account, so that the king might suffer no loss. 3Soon
Daniel distinguished himself above all the other presidents and satraps because
an excellent spirit was in him, and the king planned to appoint him over the
whole kingdom. 4So
the presidents and the satraps tried to find grounds for complaint against Daniel
in connection with the kingdom. But they could find no grounds for complaint or
any corruption, because he was faithful, and no negligence or corruption could
be found in him. 5The
men said, ‘We shall not find any ground for complaint against this Daniel
unless we find it in connection
John 7:37-44
On
the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he
cried out, ‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, 38and
let the one who believes in me drink. As the
scripture has said, “Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.” ’ 39Now
he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as
yet there was no Spirit, because
Jesus was not yet glorified. 40 When
they heard these words, some in the crowd said, ‘This is really the prophet.’ 41Others
said, ‘This is the Messiah.’ But
some asked, ‘Surely the Messiah does
not come from Galilee, does he? 42Has
not the scripture said that the Messiah is
descended from David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?’ 43So
there was a division in the crowd because of him. 44Some
of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.
Hebrews 6:1-15
Therefore
let us go on towards perfection, leaving
behind the basic teaching about Christ, and not laying again the foundation:
repentance from dead works and faith towards God, 2instruction
about baptisms, laying on of hands, resurrection of the dead, and eternal
judgement. 3And
we will do this, if God permits. 4For
it is impossible to restore again to repentance those who have once been
enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy
Spirit, 5and
have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6and
then have fallen away, since on their own they are crucifying again the Son of
God and are holding him up to contempt.7Ground
that drinks up the rain falling on it repeatedly, and that produces a crop
useful to those for whom it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. 8But
if it produces thorns and thistles, it is worthless and on the verge of being
cursed; its end is to be burned over. 9 Even
though we speak in this way, beloved, we are confident of better things in your
case, things that belong to salvation. 10For
God is not unjust; he will not overlook your work and the love that you showed
for his sake in serving the
saints, as you still do. 11And
we want each one of you to show the same diligence, so as to realize the full
assurance of hope to the very end, 12so
that you may not become sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and
patience inherit the promises. 13 When
God made a promise to Abraham, because he had no one greater by whom to swear,
he swore by himself, 14saying,
‘I will surely bless you and multiply you.’ 15And
thus Abraham, having patiently
endured, obtained the promise.
2. What are the
lessons for us in Mark 5:21-43 regarding having an excellent spirit?
Mark 5:21-43
When Jesus had crossed again in
the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered round him; and he was
by the lake. 22Then one of the leaders of the
synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet 23and begged him repeatedly, ‘My
little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so
that she may be made well, and live.’ 24So he went with him. And a
large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. 25Now there was a woman who had
been suffering from haemorrhages for twelve years.26She had endured much under many
physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather
grew worse. 27She had heard about Jesus, and
came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,28for she said, ‘If I but touch
his clothes, I will be made well.’29Immediately her haemorrhage
stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. 30Immediately aware that power
had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, ‘Who touched
my clothes?’ 31And his disciples said to him,
‘You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, “Who touched me?” ’ 32He looked all round to see who
had done it. 33But the woman, knowing what had
happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him
the whole truth. 34He said to her, ‘Daughter, your
faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.’ 35 While he was still
speaking, some people came from the leader’s house to say, ‘Your daughter is
dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?’ 36But overhearing what they
said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, ‘Do not fear, only believe.’ 37He allowed no one to follow him
except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. 38When they came to the house of
the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing
loudly. 39When he had entered, he said to
them, ‘Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but
sleeping.’ 40And they laughed at him. Then
he put them all outside, and took the child’s father and mother and those who
were with him, and went in where the child was. 41He took her by the hand and
said to her, ‘Talitha cum’, which means, ‘Little girl, get up!’ 42And immediately the girl got up
and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were
overcome with amazement. 43He strictly ordered them that
no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.
3. How do we
live with excellence in our walk with God, and in our relationships?
Psalm 130:1-8
Refrain: The Lord shall redeem us from all our sins.
Out of the depths have I called to you, O
Lord; Lord, hear my voice; let your ears consider well the voice of my
supplication. R If you, Lord, were to note what is done
amiss, O Lord, who could stand? For there is forgiveness with you; therefore
you shall be feared. R I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him;
in his word is my hope. My soul waits for the Lord, more than watchmen for the
morning, more than watchmen for the morning. R O Israel, wait for the Lord, for with the
Lord there is mercy; With him there is plenteous redemption, and he shall
redeem Israel from all their sins. R
2 Corinthians
8:7-15
Now as you excel in
everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our
love for you—so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking. 8 I do not say this as a
command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love against the earnestness
of others. 9For you know the generous act of
our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became
poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. 10And in this matter I am giving
my advice: it is appropriate for you who began last year not only to do
something but even to desire to do something—11now finish doing it, so that
your eagerness may be matched by completing it according to your means. 12For if the eagerness is there,
the gift is acceptable according to what one has—not according to what one does
not have. 13I do not mean that there should
be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair
balance between 14your present abundance and
their need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there
may be a fair balance. 15As it is written, ‘The one who
had much did not have too much, and the one who had little did not have
too little.’
Philippians
2:1-18
If
then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any
sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, 2make
my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full
accord and of one mind. 3Do
nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as
better than yourselves. 4Let
each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. 5Let
the same mind be in you that was in
Christ Jesus,
6 who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
as something to be exploited,
7 but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
8 he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
even death on a cross.
6 who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
as something to be exploited,
7 but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
8 he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
even death on a cross.
9 Therefore God also highly
exalted him
and gave him the name
that is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue should confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
and gave him the name
that is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue should confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
12 Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always
obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out
your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13for
it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his
good pleasure.
14 Do all things without murmuring and arguing, 15so
that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the
midst of a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine like stars in
the world. 16It
is by your holding fast to the word of life that I can boast on the day of
Christ that I did not run in vain or labour in vain. 17But
even if I am being poured out as a libation over the sacrifice and the offering
of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you— 18and
in the same way you also must be glad and rejoice with me.

Closing Prayer (Collect for Fifth Sunday after Pentecost)
Almighty God, you
have taught us through your Son that love fulfils the law. May we love you with
all our heart, all our soul, all our mind, and all our strength, and may we
love our neighbour as ourselves; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
