Opening Prayer/Worship
Hymn: Holy, holy, holy!
Lord God Almighty!
Theme: Spirit of Life
Topic: Who will go for us?
Reading: Isaiah 6:1-8
In
the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and
lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. 2Seraphs were
in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces,
and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. 3And
one called to another and said:
‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory.’
4The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. 5And I said: ‘Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!’ 6 Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. 7The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: ‘Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.’ 8Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’
‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory.’

Introduction
In the book of Isaiah, our
topic ‘who will go for us?’ is preceded
by ‘whom shall I send’, suggesting existence
of a relationship between the Lord and other Persons. Of course the prophet Isaiah answered yes,
and that should be our answer as well to the call of God on our lives to preach
the gospel. However, the focus of
today’s study is on the mystery of the Trinity- three Persons in One God. It is such a mystery that all attempts to
understand it are simply futile. All
analogies that we have ever come up with to explain the Trinity, although
close, fails in one way or more to explain the workings and existence of Triune
God. We know for sure that the Father,
Son and Holy Spirit are in a relationship that is beyond our
comprehension. Therefore our discussions
will be targeted at how we can be part of this most important
relationship. God the Father issued to
us an invitation (His Son Jesus
Christ) into a relationship with Himself and our neighbours through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Questions/Discussion
1. Why is being in relationship
important within the Trinity, and between the Lord and us?
Matthew 1:18-25
Now the birth of Jesus
the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had
been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be
with child from the Holy Spirit. 19Her
husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public
disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. 20But just
when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a
dream and said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your
wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will bear a son, and you are to name him
Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’22All this
took place to fulfil what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
23 ‘Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel’,
which means, ‘God is with us.’ 24When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, 25but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.
Romans 8:12-17
So then, brothers and
sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live
according to the flesh— 13for if
you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to
death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14For all
who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to
fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry,
‘Abba! Father!’ 16it is
that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children
of God,17and if
children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we
suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.
Ephesians 1:3-14
Blessed be the God and
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every
spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,4just as he chose us in Christ before
the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. 5He destined us for adoption as his children
through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will,6to the
praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7In him we have redemption through his blood, the
forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace 8that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and
insight 9he has
made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that
he set forth in Christ, 10as a plan
for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and
things on earth. 11In Christ
we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the
purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, 12so that we, who were the first to set our hope on
Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13In him you also, when you had heard the word of
truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with
the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14this is
the pledge of our inheritance towards redemption as God’s own people, to the
praise of his glory.
2. What are the lessons
for us in John 3:1-17 regarding being in relationship with the Lord?
John 3:1-17
Now
there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews.2He came
to Jesus by night and said to him, ‘Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher
who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the
presence of God.’ 3Jesus answered him, ‘Very truly, I tell you,
no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.’ 4Nicodemus
said to him, ‘How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a
second time into the mother’s womb and be born?’ 5Jesus
answered, ‘Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without
being born of water and Spirit. 6What is born of the flesh is
flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7Do not be
astonished that I said to you, “You must be born from above.” 8The
windblows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know
where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the
Spirit.’ 9Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can these things be?’10Jesus
answered him, ‘Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these
things? 11 ‘Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know
and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. 12If
I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you
believe if I tell you about heavenly things? 13No one has
ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14And
just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man
be lifted up, 15that whoever believes in him may have eternal
life. 16 ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 ‘Indeed,
God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that
the world might be saved through him.
3. In what ways can we say
‘here am I; send me!’ to
the Lord’s call ‘who will go for us’?
Psalm 29:1-11
Refrain: Ascribe to the
Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe
to the Lord, you gods, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the
Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. R The
voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; the Lord is
upon the mighty waters. The voice of the Lord is a powerful voice; the voice of
the Lord is a voice of splendour. R The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees;
the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon; He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and
Mount Hermon like a young wild ox. R The voice of the Lord splits the flames of
fire; the voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the
wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe and strips
the forests bare. And in the temple of the Lord all are crying,
"Glory!" R The Lord sits enthroned above the flood; the
Lord sits enthroned as king for evermore. The Lord shall give strength to his
people; the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace. R
Matthew 28:16-20
Now the eleven
disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some
doubted. 18And Jesus
came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to
me. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything that I have
commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’
Romans 12:3-21
For by the grace given to me I say to
everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to
think, but to think with sober judgement, each according to the measure of
faith that God has assigned. 4For
as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same
function, 5so we, who
are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of
another. 6We have
gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion
to faith; 7ministry,
in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; 8the
exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence;
the compassionate, in cheerfulness. 9 Let
love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; 10love one another with
mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour.11Do not lag
in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12Rejoice
in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. 13Contribute to the needs
of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. 14 Bless
those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.15Rejoice with
those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16Live
in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. 17Do not repay anyone evil
for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. 18If it is possible, so far
as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19Beloved, never avenge
yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine,
I will repay, says the Lord.’ 20No,
‘if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them
something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their
heads.’21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Conclusion
God the Father issued to us
an invitation (His Son Jesus Christ)
into a relationship with Himself and our neighbours through the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Collect
Father, we praise you: through your Word
and Holy Spirit you created all things. You reveal your salvation in all the
world by sending to us Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. Through your Holy
Spirit you give us a share in your life and love. Fill us with the vision of
your glory, that we may always serve and praise you, Father, Son, and Holy
Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer 3
The
Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift
up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let
us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and
praise.
Blessed
are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth; we give you thanks and
praise, because, in the mystery you disclose to us, you reveal your glory as
the glory of your Son and the Holy Spirit: three persons equal in majesty, undivided
in splendour, yet one Lord, one God, ever to be adored in your everlasting
glory. Therefore with all the company of heaven we raise our voices to proclaim
the glory of your name.
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of
the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
We
give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made known
to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken
through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your Son. For
in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the
Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and
made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error
into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.
On
the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely
accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to
you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: this is
my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After
supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to
them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which
is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink
it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore,
Father, according to his command,
we remember his death,
we proclaim his resurrection,
we await his coming in glory;
and
we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting
to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
We
pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they
may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite
us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be
sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
In
the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and
bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and
daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the
head of the Church, and the author of our salvation;
by
whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour
and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.
The
Lord’s Prayer
And
now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed
be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give
us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those
who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.
Amen.
The
Breaking of the Bread
“I
am the bread of life,” says the Lord.
“Whoever
comes to me will never be hungry;
whoever
believes in me will never thirst.”
Taste and see that the Lord is good;
happy are they who trust in him!
The
Communion
The
gifts of God for the People of God.
Thanks be to God.
Prayer after Communion
All
your works praise you, O Lord.
And your faithful servants bless you.
Gracious God we thank you for feeding us
with the body and blood of your Son Jesus
Christ.
May we, who share his body, live his
risen life;
we, who drink his cup, bring life to
others;
we, whom the Spirit lights, give light
to the world.
Keep us firm in the hope you have set before
us,
so that we and all your children shall
be free,
and the whole earth live to praise your
name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Blessing
May
God keep you all your days.
May
Christ shield you in all your ways.
May
the Spirit bring you healing and peace.
May
God the Holy Trinity drive all darkness from you
and
pour upon you blessing and light. Amen.
Dismissal
Go
forth in the name of Christ.
Thanks be to God.
