1 Samuel 15:34-35, 16:1-13
Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house in
Gibeah of Saul. 35Samuel did not see Saul again
until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over Saul. And the Lord was
sorry that he had made Saul king over Israel.
16: 1-13 The Lord said
to Samuel, ‘How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being
king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse
the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.’ 2Samuel said, ‘How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill
me.’ And the Lord said, ‘Take a heifer with you, and
say, “I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.” 3Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you
shall do; and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you.’ 4Samuel did what the Lord commanded,
and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and
said, ‘Do you come peaceably?’ 5He said, ‘Peaceably; I have
come to sacrifice to the Lord;
sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.’ And he sanctified Jesse
and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, ‘Surely the Lord’s anointed is now before the Lord.’ 7But the Lord said
to Samuel, ‘Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature,
because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look
on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.’ 8Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He
said, ‘Neither has the Lord chosen this one.’ 9Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, ‘Neither has the Lord chosen
this one.’ 10Jesse made seven of his sons
pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, ‘The Lord has not chosen any of these.’ 11Samuel said to Jesse, ‘Are all your sons here?’ And he said,
‘There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.’ And Samuel said
to Jesse, ‘Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.’ 12He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful
eyes, and was handsome. The Lord said,
‘Rise and anoint him; for this is the one.’ 13Then Samuel took the horn of
oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came
mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to
Ramah.
Introduction
In the story of David’s anointing as King of Israel by Samuel, it is
clear that no one present knew who God wanted to be King. Neither Jesse nor his sons including David, nor
Samuel the Prophet knew! If we were
present then, we would not have known too.
It took the Spirit of the Lord to identify who God has chosen as King of
Israel. There are several lessons in
this story that can help us as we serve the Lord and live for Christ. In no particular order, some of the lessons
are: it takes the Spirit of God to understand and do what the Lord wants us to
do; God does not choose people based on outward appearances; and we need God’s
Spirit to guide us each step of the way.
One of the roles of the Holy Spirit in our lives is spiritual
discernment. To discern what the Holy Spirit
is saying to us is truly a blessing we cannot live without as followers of
Christ.
Questions/Discussion
1. How
will you describe spiritual discernment?
1
Kings 3:3-14
Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of his
father David; only, he sacrificed and offered incense at the high places. 4The king went to Gibeon
to sacrifice there, for that was the principal high place; Solomon used to
offer a thousand burnt-offerings on that altar. 5At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream
by night; and God said, ‘Ask what I should give you.’ 6And Solomon said, ‘You
have shown great and steadfast love to your servant my father David, because he
walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of
heart towards you; and you have kept for him this great and steadfast love, and
have given him a son to sit on his throne today.7And now, O Lord my God, you have made your
servant king in place of my father David, although I am only a little child; I
do not know how to go out or come in. 8And your servant is in
the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a great people, so numerous they
cannot be numbered or counted. 9Give
your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, able to
discern between good and evil; for who can govern this your great people?’ 10 It pleased the
Lord that Solomon had asked this. 11God
said to him, ‘Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long
life or riches, or for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself
understanding to discern what is right, 12I now do according to
your word. Indeed I give you a wise and discerning mind; no one like you has
been before you and no one like you shall arise after you. 13I give you also what
you have not asked, both riches and honour all your life; no other king shall
compare with you. 14If you will walk in my
ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked,
then I will lengthen your life.’

Corinthians 2:1-16
When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or
wisdom. 2For I decided to know nothing
among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. 4My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of
wisdom, but with a demonstration
of the Spirit and of power, 5so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the
power of God. 6 Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not
a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish. 7But we speak God’s wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed
before the ages for our glory. 8None of the rulers of this age
understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of
glory. 9But, as it is written, ‘What no
eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has
prepared for those who love him’— 10these things God has revealed
to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths
of God. 11For what human being knows what
is truly human except the human spirit that is within? So also no one
comprehends what is truly God’s except the Spirit of God.12Now we have received not the
spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand
the gifts bestowed on us by God.13And we speak of these things in words not taught by human wisdom
but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual things to those who are
spiritual. 14 Those who are unspiritual do not receive the gifts of God’s
Spirit, for they are foolishness to them, and they are unable to understand
them because they are discerned spiritually. 15Those who are spiritual discern
all things, and they are themselves subject to no one else’s scrutiny. 16 ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord so as to
instruct him?’ But we have the mind of Christ.
Philippians
1:1-11
Paul and Timothy, servants of
Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the
bishops and deacons: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord
Jesus Christ. 3 I thank my God
every time I remember you, 4constantly praying with joy in
every one of my prayers for all of you, 5because of your sharing in the
gospel from the first day until now. 6I am confident of this, that
the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day
of Jesus Christ. 7It is right for me to think
this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God’s grace with me, both in my imprisonment and
in the defence and confirmation of the gospel. 8For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the
compassion of Christ Jesus. 9And this is my prayer, that
your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight10to help you to determine what
is best, so that on the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, 11having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through
Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.
2.
What are the lessons for us in Mark 4:26-34 regarding spiritual discernment?
Mark
4:26-34
He also said, ‘The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter
seed on the ground, 27and would sleep and rise night
and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. 28The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head,
then the full grain in the head. 29But when the grain is ripe, at
once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.’ 30 He also said,
‘With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for
it? 31It is like a mustard seed,
which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; 32yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all
shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make
nests in its shade.’ 33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they
were able to hear it; 34he did not speak to them except
in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples.
Romans
8:16-30
it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children
of God, 17and if children, then heirs, heirs
of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we
may also be glorified with him. 18 I consider that the
sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to
be revealed to us. 19For the creation waits with
eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; 20for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will
but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to
decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour
pains until now; 23and not only the creation, but
we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we
wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24For in hope we
were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? 25But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with
patience. 26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do
not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. 27And God, who
searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to
the will of God. 28 We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called
according to his purpose. 29For those whom he foreknew he
also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he
might be the firstborn within a large family. 30And those whom he predestined
he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he
justified he also glorified.
3. Discuss
some of the situations where we need spiritual discernment.
Psalm
20:1-9
Refrain: The Lord gives victory to his anointed.
May
the Lord answer you in the day of trouble, the Name of the God of Jacob defend
you; Send you help from his holy place and strengthen you out of Zion; R Remember all your offerings and
accept your burnt sacrifice; Grant you your heart's desire and prosper all your
plans. R We will shout for joy at
your victory and triumph in the name of our God; may the Lord grant all your
requests. R Now I know that the Lord
gives victory to his anointed; he will answer him out of his holy heaven, with
the victorious strength of his right hand. Some put their trust in chariots and
some in horses, but we will call upon the name of the Lord our God. R They collapse and fall down, but we
will arise and stand upright. O Lord, give victory to the king and answer us
when we call. R
Matthew
2:1-3, 7-23
In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of
Judea, wise men from the East
came to Jerusalem, 2asking, ‘Where is the child who
has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.’ 3When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem
with him;
7 Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time
when the star had appeared. 8Then he sent them to Bethlehem,
saying, ‘Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him,
bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.’ 9When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of
them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where
the child was. 10When they saw that the star had
stopped, they were overwhelmed
with joy. 11On entering the house, they saw
the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then,
opening their treasure-chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense,
and myrrh. 12And having been warned in a
dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. 13 Now after they
had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Get up,
take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell
you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.’ 14Then Joseph got
up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, 15and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfil
what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, ‘Out of Egypt I have
called my son.’ 16 When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he was infuriated, and he sent and
killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or
under, according to the time that he had learned from the wise men. 17Then was fulfilled what had been spoken through the prophet
Jeremiah:
18 ‘A voice was heard in Ramah,
wailing and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
she refused to be consoled, because they are no more.’
18 ‘A voice was heard in Ramah,
wailing and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
she refused to be consoled, because they are no more.’
19 When Herod died, an angel
of the Lord suddenly appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, 20‘Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of
Israel, for those who were seeking the child’s life are dead.’ 21Then Joseph got
up, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. 22But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place
of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And after being warned in a
dream, he went away to the district of Galilee. 23There he made his home in a town called Nazareth, so that what
had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, ‘He will be called a
Nazorean.’
2
Corinthians 5:6-10, 14-17
So we are always confident; even though we know that while we
are at home in the body we are away from the Lord— 7for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the
body and at home with the Lord. 9So whether we are at home or
away, we make it our aim to please him. 10For all of us must appear
before the judgement seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense for
what has been done in the body, whether good or evil.14For the love of Christ urges us
on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have
died. 15And he died for all, so that
those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and
was raised for them. 16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human
point of view; even though we
once knew Christ from a human point of view, we
know him no longer in that way. 17So if anyone is in Christ,
there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has
become new!

Closing Prayer (Collect
for Third Sunday after Pentecost)
Almighty
God, without you we are not able to please you. Mercifully grant that your Holy
Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our
Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
for ever. Amen.
