Reading: 1 Samuel
8:4-11, 16-20
Then all the
elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, 5and said to him,
‘You are old and your sons do not follow in your ways; appoint for us, then, a
king to govern us, like other nations.’6But the thing
displeased Samuel when they said, ‘Give us a king to govern us.’ Samuel prayed
to the Lord, 7and the Lord said
to Samuel, ‘Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for
they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over
them. 8Just as they have
done to me, from the day I
brought them up out of Egypt to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods,
so also they are doing to you. 9Now then, listen
to their voice; only—you shall solemnly warn them, and show them the ways of
the king who shall reign over them.’ 10 So Samuel
reported all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for
a king. 11He said, ‘These
will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons
and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen, and to run before his
chariots; 16He will take your
male and female slaves, and the best of your cattle and donkeys, and put them to his work. 17He will take
one-tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves. 18And in that day
you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves; but
theLord will not answer you in that day.’ 19 But the
people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; they said, ‘No! but we are
determined to have a king over us, 20so that we also
may be like other nations, and that our king may govern us and go out before us
and fight our battles.’
Introduction
Following
Christ does not preclude us from the pains and challenges of making decisions-
trivial and crucial. In the reading
above, elders of Israel at the time decided that having a king is better than
the rule of God through His prophets.
Their reason was that they wanted to be like other nations. Although their decision may appear reasonable,
at least they know what they want and are demanding for it, the bases for their
demand were completely flawed. They did
not seek the Lord about it; and got the whole idea from heathen nations! On the contrary, as soon as they brought the
matter up with Samuel the prophet, he sought the Lord in prayer. God told Samuel what to tell the people. Unfortunately, the people refused to listen,
and were determined to have a king rule over them. Christians need to follow the example of
Samuel. We should follow the guidance of
the Holy Spirit at all times, through prayer and studying the word of God, that
all may go well with us. Failure to do
so results in unnecessary heartbreaks and sufferings.
Questions/Discussion
1. In what ways
does the Holy Spirit guide us?
Psalm 138:1-8
Refrain: The Lord will make good his purpose for me.
I will give thanks to you, O
Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I will sing your praise. I will bow
down toward your holy temple and praise your name, because of your love and
faithfulness; R For you have glorified your name and your
word above all things. When I called, you answered me; you increased my
strength within me. R All the
kings of the earth will praise you, O Lord, when they have heard the words of
your mouth. They will sing of the ways of the Lord, that great is the glory of
the Lord. R Though the Lord be high, he cares for
the lowly; he perceives the haughty from afar. Though I walk in the midst of
trouble, you keep me safe; you stretch forth your hand against the fury of my
enemies; your right hand shall save me. The Lord will make good his purpose for
me; O Lord, your love endures for ever; do not abandon the works of your hands.
R
John 16:7, 12-15
Nevertheless, I
tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go
away, the Advocate will not come
to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 12 ‘I still
have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13When the Spirit
of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on
his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the
things that are to come. 14He will glorify
me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you.15All that the
Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and
declare it to you.
1 Peter 5:1-11
Now as an elder
myself and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in
the glory to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you 2to tend the flock
of God that is in your charge, exercising the oversight, not under compulsion but willingly, as
God would have you do it—not for sordid gain but eagerly. 3Do not lord it
over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock. 4And when the
chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away. 5In the same way,
you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you must clothe yourselves
with humility in your dealings with one another, for
‘God opposes the proud,
but gives grace to the humble.’
‘God opposes the proud,
but gives grace to the humble.’
6 Humble
yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in
due time. 7Cast all your
anxiety on him, because he cares for you. 8Discipline
yourselves; keep alert. Like a
roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to
devour.9Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your
brothers and sisters throughout
the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. 10And after you
have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to
his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and
establish you. 11To him be the
power for ever and ever. Amen.
2. What are the
lessons for us in Mark 3:20-35 regarding being guided by the Holy Spirit?
Mark 3:20-35
and the crowd
came together again, so that they could not even eat.21When his family
heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, ‘He has gone
out of his mind.’ 22And the scribes
who came down from Jerusalem said, ‘He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the
demons he casts out demons.’ 23And he called
them to him, and spoke to them in parables, ‘How can Satan cast out Satan? 24If a kingdom is
divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25And if a house is
divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26And if Satan has
risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. 27But no one can
enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property without first tying up the
strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered. 28 ‘Truly I
tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they
utter; 29but whoever
blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of
an eternal sin’— 30for they had
said, ‘He has an unclean spirit.’ 31 Then his
mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called
him. 32A crowd was
sitting around him; and they said to him, ‘Your mother and your brothers and
sisters are outside, asking for
you.’ 33And he replied,
‘Who are my mother and my brothers?’34And looking at those who sat around him, he said, ‘Here are my
mother and my brothers! 35Whoever does the
will of God is my brother and sister and mother.’
3. How do we
allow the Holy Spirit to guide our decisions? What are the benefits?
2 Corinthians
4:13-18, 5:1
But just as we
have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture—‘I believed,
and so I spoke’—we also believe, and so we speak, 14because we know
that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will
bring us with you into his presence.15Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends
to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. 16 So we do
not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature
is being renewed day by day. 17For this slight
momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all
measure, 18because we look
not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is
temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal. 5:1For we know that
if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a
house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
Galatians
5:16-18, 22-26
Live by the
Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh.17For what the
flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed
to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing
what you want. 18But if you are
led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. 22 By
contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
generosity, faithfulness, 23gentleness, and
self-control. There is no law against such things. 24And those who
belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25If we live by the
Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. 26Let us not become
conceited, competing against one another, envying one another.
Ephesians 6:10-20
Finally, be
strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. 11Put on the whole
armour of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For our struggle is not against enemies of
blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the
cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in
the heavenly places. 13Therefore take up
the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day,
and having done everything, to stand firm. 14Stand therefore,
and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of
righteousness.15As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to
proclaim the gospel of peace. 16With all of
these, take the shield of faith,
with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet
of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 Pray in the
Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert
and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. 19Pray also for me,
so that when I speak, a message may be given to me to make known with boldness
the mystery of the gospel,20for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare
it boldly, as I must speak.

Conclusion
We should
follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit at all times, through prayer and
studying the word of God, that all may go well with us.
Closing Prayer (Collect for Second Sunday
after Pentecost)
O God, you have assured the
human family of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Deliver us from
the death of sin and raise us to new life in him, who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
